The first Winter Olympics was not called that at the time
Chamonix held its competitions in January and February 1924 as an "International Winter Sports Week", with athletes from 16 nations. The IOC later granted them, retrospectively, the status of the first Winter Olympics. Alpine skiing was not on the programme.
